It is situated approximately 545 kilometers from the capital city, Cotonou. Bemb\u00e8r\u00e8k\u00e8 borders the municipality of N\u2019Dali to the south, Gougounou to the north, Nikki and Kalal\u00e9 to the east, and Sinend\u00e9 to the west.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For some of the world&#8217;s most vulnerable communities, the time to confront the consequences of climate change arrived long ago. Rapid desertification, the disappearance of rivers and aquifers, deforestation accelerating soil erosion and degradation, and declining natural resources are all contributing to the disappearance of entire rural communities for one simple reason: lack of water.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Benin is divided into two distinct climatic zones. The south benefits from two rainy seasons and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, while the north experiences only one rainy season and borders arid countries such as Niger and Burkina Faso. This natural imbalance exposes northern Benin to progressive desertification if appropriate measures are not taken. The effects of climate change, combined with demographic pressures, are accelerating the advance of desert-like conditions across northern Benin. The disappearance of rivers, the scarcity of trees, the decline in livestock populations, and the suffering of local communities are increasingly visible. Women are particularly affected, as they bear the primary responsibility of providing water for their households.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While access to water is already challenging in populated areas with existing infrastructure, the difficulties are even greater for remote villages such as Gando Peulh and Dangougourou. The nearest populated areas are located between 24 and 97 kilometers away, and the paths residents must travel to obtain water are difficult to navigate. The installation process includes community training workshops, democratic elections of a local management and maintenance committee, geological surveys to ensure a reliable water supply, infrastructure design, water distribution points, and mechanisms to guarantee the long-term operation of the pumps. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The construction process consists of three stages:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Site assessment and geological surveys: Identification and evaluation of locations capable of providing a sustainable and high-yield water source. This phase is essential to ensuring the long-term viability of the wells. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Drilling and pump installation:<\/strong> Construction of boreholes and installation of appropriate pumping systems for water extraction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Design and construction of the surrounding infrastructure:<\/strong> All infrastructure surrounding the water extraction points will be designed to facilitate access for community members, allow the placement of water containers, provide drainage systems for household use, and create separate drainage areas for livestock. Protective mechanisms will also be installed to ensure the proper operation and sustainability of the pumps. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Objective<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The primary objective of the project is to ensure the permanent availability of water from the boreholes for community use. Access to safe water will significantly improve the quality of life of village residents by:<br\/>Providing water for cooking and household food preparation.<br\/>Facilitating personal hygiene.<br\/>Supporting the cleaning of dishes, clothing, and homes.<br\/>Reducing the spread of diseases associated with contaminated open wells.<br\/>Strengthening community resilience and long-term sustainability.<br\/>The project will help secure the future of these communities and reduce the need for forced migration in search of water resources.<br\/>  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Direct beneficiaries: Each well will provide water access to approximately 450 people. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">900 people across the two communities.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Total project budget: <\/strong>\u20ac25,488.00<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Project implemented during the 2019\u20132020 academic year The municipality of Bemb\u00e8r\u00e8k\u00e8, located in the Borgou Department, is ranked among the ten poorest municipalities out of Benin\u2019s seventy-seven municipalities.
