School infrastructure improvement in the Philippines: renovation and expansion of Anunciata School in San Carlos

12 Aug, 2025 | Educational project

Projects implemented during the 2024–2025 academic year

Anunciata School, administered by the Dominican Sisters of the Annunciation in San Carlos, Pangasinan (Philippines), is an institution committed to holistic education as a means of evangelization and social transformation. Its mission combines academic, human, and Christian development to form children and young people capable of assuming responsibilities, generating positive change, and being leaven in a society that faces multiple challenges. The school community mainly serves students from vulnerable backgrounds, including households of farmers, informal traders, displaced workers, and single-parent families.

San Carlos is the most populated city in the Ilocos Region, with 205,424 inhabitants according to the 2020 census, reflecting both its demographic importance and the potential reach of educational work in the area.

The city has deep historical roots: it was founded in 1587 by Dominican missionaries and has been a center of cultural and educational tradition in the region. Improving and completing its school infrastructure is key to sustaining and expanding the quality of education it provides, especially in a context where many families are still dealing with the economic consequences of recent crises.

Playground renovation

The project

This project aims to provide students with a safe, functional, and stimulating space for play, interaction, and recreation. Recess is not only a time for leisure: it facilitates cognitive, emotional, and psychomotor development, promotes skills such as decision-making, leadership, creativity, and resilience, and strengthens interpersonal interaction and human values in an environment conducive to holistic growth.

Objective
  • Provide students with concrete opportunities to practice leadership, creative thinking, and perseverance through recreational activities.
  • Foster healthy coexistence and personal and interpersonal growth through sharing and socialization in a renovated space.

Beneficiaries

  • Direct: Students in the preschool and primary levels of Anunciata School in San Carlos.
  • Indirect: Families and teachers who benefit from a more complete and formative school environment.

Total project budget: €5,776.95

Adaptation of the second floor of the kindergarten building

The project

This subproject seeks to complete and adapt the second floor of the kindergarten building—started in 2017 and currently unfinished due to lack of resources—to convert it into a functional center that will house administrative offices (finance, registrar, and commissary) and a school library. This will strengthen institutional management, expand the pedagogical resources available, and provide adequate support to students, families, and staff in the school’s Catholic educational mission.

Objective
  • Improve administrative and academic operations by providing adequate infrastructure for school management.
  • Strengthen the quality of Catholic education by providing the school with academic support spaces (library) and organized institutional service areas.

Beneficiaries:

  • Direct: Students, teaching staff, and administrative staff of Anunciata School.
  • Indirect: Families and the wider educational community who benefit from a stronger and more efficient institution.

Total project budget: €10,396.34
