Community bakery for migrants in La Serena: integration and employment through solidarity support in Chile

7 Aug, 2025 | Community development

Project implemented during the 2018–2019 academic year

In response to the growing migration flows into Chile since 2017, the Dominican Sisters of the Annunciation, together with the Scalabrinian Fathers, established a welcoming and support program for migrants in La Serena. The initiative served people arriving from Venezuela, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia.

As part of this process, the idea of a community bakery emerged as a collective enterprise designed to create stable employment opportunities for migrants facing significant barriers to labor market integration.

Anunciata Solidarity Foundation (FASOL) supported the initiative by financing the complete equipment of the bakery workshop, including ovens, mixers, furniture, and essential baking tools. This contribution made it possible to launch a sustainable project that promotes integration, self-reliance, and dignity for people seeking a fresh start far from their homeland.
