Pucallpa, the capital of the Province of Coronel Portillo in the Amazonian region of Ucayali, is one of Peru’s fastest-growing urban areas, characterized by significant informal expansion. In recent years, the city has experienced rapid growth driven by internal migration, precarious employment, and limited access to basic services. This situation is particularly critical in peripheral settlements such as Señor de los Milagros, located in the district of Yarinacocha.
Most families in this community live on limited incomes, rely on informal economic activities, and have little or no access to digital technologies at home. According to Peru’s National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), only 30% of households in rural and peri-urban areas of Ucayali have internet access, deepening educational inequalities and limiting the development of essential digital skills among children and adolescents.
Within this context, the educational and pastoral center managed by the Dominican Sisters of the Annunciation provides educational support and human development opportunities through tutoring programs, vacation workshops, and vocational training activities. However, the lack of technological infrastructure currently limits both the reach and quality of these initiatives.
The project
This project aims to strengthen the non-formal educational programs offered by the Señor de los Milagros Pastoral Center through the creation of a fully equipped computer lab and the integration of digital learning tools that foster education, creativity, and innovation.
The proposal includes:
- The installation of a computer lab equipped with 20 desktop computers, a projector, a support laptop, a projection screen, voltage stabilizers, and computer peripherals.
- Activation of educational English-learning licenses and interactive literacy applications already donated by the Mexican civil association “Te Invito a Mi Mesa.”
- Use of the center’s existing infrastructure and qualified human resources, including trained teachers and volunteers, ensuring the sustainability of the project without requiring additional investment in staff training.
Más allá de dotar al centro de equipamiento, esta iniciativa representa un primer paso estratégico hacia la futura acreditación estatal del centro educativo, permitiendo en el mediano plazo consolidar su rol como institución de referencia en educación no formal dentro de la zona. La formalización del centro abriría nuevas puertas de financiación, validación académica y reconocimiento para los estudiantes.
This proposal therefore seeks not only to improve current educational conditions but also to advance toward a dignified, innovative, and sustainable educational model in one of the most vulnerable areas of the Peruvian Amazon.
General objective:
To promote inclusive, dynamic, and technology-based education in the settlement of Señor de los Milagros (Pucallpa, Peru) through the creation of a computer lab and the strengthening of non-formal educational activities that develop digital, artistic, and communication skills among vulnerable children and young people, as a first step toward the future official accreditation of the educational center.
Beneficiaries: 25 young people participating in vocational training workshops, including sewing and event decoration.
- Teachers and volunteers working at the educational and pastoral center.
- 26 children enrolled in the academic support and tutoring program.
