Local context:

In recent years, the number of children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has increased significantly , creating a growing need for educational and therapeutic approaches tailored to their specific needs.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines Autism Spectrum Disorder as a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by difficulties with social interaction, communication and behavioural flexibility, often accompanied by sensory sensitivities and repetitive patterns of behaviour. These characteristics can have a significant impact on learning, social relationships and participation in group activities.

Research has shown that music can be a valuable therapeutic and educational tool for children with ASD, helping to support communication, emotional regulation, attention, motor coordination, social interaction and emotional expression.

The Escola de Música Irmã Rosa Font Fuster (Sister Rosa Font Fuster School of Music), located in the Aarão Reis community in Belo Horizonte, currently supports 13 children with moderate ASD.

However, traditional group music education can present significant challenges for these children, including:

  • difficulty maintaining attention for extended periods;
  • sensory sensitivities;
  • anxiety in group settings;
  • communication difficulties;
  • the need for individualised support.

Many families also face emotional and social challenges as they come to terms with, understand and learn how to support their children following a diagnosis. This highlights the need for spaces where families can receive guidance, be heard and find mutual support.

In response to these needs, the project aims to provide inclusive, adapted music education, using music as a therapeutic tool to support the holistic development of children with ASD while strengthening the support available to their families.

The project

The initiative was developed to address the need for music education adapted to children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, providing a more inclusive and supportive learning experience that respects each student’s individual needs and characteristics.

The project includes:

  • the use of visual aids and sensory materials;
  • progressive activities focused on sound perception and rhythm;
  • individual and group support;
  • guidance for teachers on inclusive teaching strategies;
  • spaces where families can receive support, guidance and training.

The initiative aims to use music as a therapeutic tool to support students’ cognitive, emotional and social development, while promoting their inclusion in the school environment.
